The volcanic heart of Iceland
During the Volcano Express experience, we take you on a journey through southwest Iceland, one of the most volcanically active regions in the country.
Throughout the Reykjanes peninsula, you’ll see some of the most thrilling landscapes and volcanic phenomena in the Land of Fire and Ice. In fact, as Reykjanes is still being created and radically altered by volcanoes, it’s often known as one of the youngest places on Earth.
The reason for all this activity is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a tectonic boundary that passes directly through Iceland. Here, the Eurasian and the North American plates pull apart, causing magma and volcanic gases to bubble up to the surface of the Earth.
